A problem solver, a family man, and a believer in Arizona’s future
Driven by a deep love for his family and a lifelong mission to heal broken systems, Hugh is stepping up to challenge the political status quo and build an Arizona where the next generation can thrive.
Hear From Hugh
From an early age, Hugh Lytle was wired to look at things differently. He didn’t just accept bad rules or broken processes; he looked for ways to fix them. He stood up for the underdog and flat-out refused to accept systems that left people behind. It’s a mindset he inherited from his father, Ben Lytle, who taught him that no problem is too big to solve and that with the right focus, “anything is possible.”
Hugh’s journey isn’t the typical path of a politician. He is a problem solver at heart who became a successful entrepreneur and innovator not just for the sake of business, but to repair what was broken in our society. Whether it was seniors struggling with complex health conditions or marginalized communities being denied basic dignity, Hugh’s response has always been the same: turn frustration into practical, measurable action.
For all his success building organizations, the person who keeps Hugh grounded is his wife, Barbara. For 27 years, she has been his partner, his rock, and his “second conscience”, reminding him to stay present and never stop fighting for what’s right. Together, they built their lives in Arizona, putting down deep roots and raising their three adult children: Emily, Hannah, and Harris.
Hugh’s love for Arizona is rooted in its people. He and Barbara founded the Hugh & Barbara Lytle Foundation because giving back isn’t an obligation to them; it’s who they are. They are fiercely committed to supporting grassroots organizations that create safer, healthier, and more inclusive communities across the state, ensuring resources go directly to the people who need them most.
Hugh has seen the worst of broken systems up close. Years ago, he uncovered a staggering injustice: in South Phoenix, life expectancy was 14 years shorter than just miles away in Scottsdale. While others looked away, Hugh’s heart burned to engineer a solution. In 2015, he took a massive risk, betting on an innovative new approach, and founded Equality Health to ensure marginalized communities received the care they deserved.
This fight is deeply personal. One moment still haunts him: on a ride-along with his community health team, he met a 77-year-old Spanish-speaking woman in a group home. She was suffering from a fall, her pain medication was being stolen, she had no food, and her wounds were completely untreated. Standing in that room, Hugh had only one thought: What if we hadn’t shown up today?
That moment is why he refuses to back down when systems fail people. Over decades, Hugh co-founded companies like Axia Health Management, bringing the SilverSneakers program to millions of seniors, and Equality Health, which now serves over 800,000 Medicaid patients across five states. He proved that you can take on seemingly impossible institutional problems and win, bringing efficiency and compassion back to systems that had forgotten the people they were meant to serve.
Why would someone who has spent their life healing healthcare step into the brutal arena of politics as an Independent? Because Hugh sees another system that is fundamentally broken, and he is watching his children’s generation lose hope. Young Arizonans are facing a reality where housing is out of reach, wages lag, and the political extremes are too busy fighting each other to notice.
Hugh refuses to quietly accept this decline. He is running for Governor to ensure that Emily, Hannah, Harris, and all Arizonans inherit a state filled with upward mobility. To do that, he is bringing his practical problem-solving mindset to government to focus on the challenges facing Arizona today.
Moving past partisan culture wars to build a modernized education system that truly prepares students for the jobs of the future.
Treating healthcare as a fundamental right, addressing physician shortages, stopping rural hospital closures, and driving down daily costs for families.
Lowering the day-to-day cost of living and actively pitching Arizona to global employers so young people can afford homes and start businesses here.
A defining legacy issue. Hugh is committed to independent, long-term planning for our water future, free from partisan gridlock, ensuring Arizona remains a vibrant place to live and raise a family for generations to come.
Hugh Lytle loves Arizona too much to watch its potential be limited by a broken, polarized system. That is why this campaign is built entirely around a single, powerful theme: We Are Arizona. This isn’t a political party; it is a movement bringing Arizonans together from every background, independent-minded voters, the vital Hispanic electorate, and the next generation, to do what is right for Arizona and its people.
Hugh is running as an Independent because he refuses to surrender his beliefs to political tribes. He knows that true leadership isn’t about red or blue; it’s about rolling up your sleeves, diagnosing the root cause of a problem, and doing the hard work to deliver results. Now, he is asking all Arizonans to join him in this shared mission: to rediscover our frontier spirit, heal our broken systems, and build a government that is accountable, compassionate, and relentlessly focused on tomorrow.
